Turbomachinery AerodynamicsA new area for the
Experimental Engines Lab is in turbomachinery aerodynamics. Two ways of
reducing the climate change impact of aviation are to reduce the weight
of the engine and increase engine efficiency. This can be achieved by
simultaneously reducing the number of stages required in the engine's
turbine and increasing the turbine efficiency.
Our work in this area is focused on directly measuring transient processes leading to efficiency losses in high-speed turbomachinery experiencing periodic wake passages using laser diagnostics. This will identify and quantify problematic flow phenomena, and how these phenomena are affected by geometrical and operational parameters of the engine. |
