Qiang An (PhD Candidate)Qiang joined the
Experimental Engines Lab in 2013 as an MASc student, and then
transferred to the PhD program in 2014. His research focuses on
understanding the mechanisms and limits of flame blow-off and
flash-back in swirl-stabilized combustors burning alternative fuels,
such as biogas and syngas. These phenomena limit the operational range
of practical engines and depend on complex interactions between the
flow field and chemistry. Qiang is using high-speed PLIF and PIV
diagnostics to investigate the flow-flame interactions that occur at
blow-off and flash-back conditions, in order to better understand how
these phenomena relate to fundamental combustion properties. This work
is part of a large project funded by the BioFuelNet NCE, in
collaboration with McGill University and Siemens Canada. Qiang's
undergraduate work was conducted at Beihang University in China.
